Vast Sky (day eighteen)

I had forgotten what it was like to look up and see the stars. It's hard in the city. With all of the lights, you rarely have a clear enough night to see anything up there. Cole theorized that we could see them so well tonight because everyone was hibernating from the holidays still.
I like to think that they were showing off for me.

Orion was in spectacular form tonight.
His belt stretched proudly overhead-
One star for my little dog who never stood a chance against that bug.
One star for my Grandfather who would have been 90 last week.
One star for my Nana who taught me how to make Italian cookies and stored them in a giant bucket labeled "Marshmallow Fluff".

Then there was Mars or maybe, Venus shining brighter than all the rest. Cole talked about looking into the future or maybe it was the past. All I could think of was the gods at work.

We pointed at Polaris at the same time, our fingers arching over the shadows of trees.
"You know, it's a common misconception that the North Star is the brightest thing in the sky" I said to him.
"Sorry, I'm not well read in conspiracy theories" he replied.

It's funny to think compare the visibility of one star with who shot Kennedy.
Tomorrow night it will be snowing too hard to see anything in the sky.
I think I'll still keep on with the celestial navigation.
